Building an involved community doesn’t happen overnight. Meet the director behind Destination Services, Jennifer Buckley. She’s tasked with immersing the Aurora community in the conference and convention experience. From organizing volunteer programs, visitor guide distribution, and partnership coordination learn more about her plans for Visit Aurora’s Destination Services Department.
Q: Tell us a little bit about your story.
Hospitality has been my passion since I was 15 years old. It all started with my first job, hosting birthday parties at an ice skating rink. A lot has changed over the years, but the heart of it all remains the same –that is making people feel welcome and providing services beyond expectation. After receiving my degree from the University of North Texas, my professional career began at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center. I started at the front desk but soon transferred to the exciting world of event management. I continued my career in event management with Marriott and had the opportunity to live in D.C., Philadelphia, and Charleston, West Virginia working for various full-service properties. I have always enjoyed building relationships with people and ensuring their convention or event is a great success. Even after all these years, my goal is still the same. Only this time, I get to promote a great city and, most importantly, the people that make our city great!
Q: Talk about your department and upcoming projects.
We have a lot of exciting things happening in the department! Visit Aurora has been growing incredibly fast and we are looking forward to offering our members, including hotels and restaurants, even more even more exclusive benefits. I’m working with my team to build a partnership program that is of high value to our partners: something that they’re proud and eager to be a part of.
We are in the process of creating our volunteer program, which will recruit locals who are interested in becoming a city ambassador. They will assist the conventions and events coming to Aurora. Every major convention needs volunteers to assist with registration, welcome information desks, stuffing conference bags, and much more. If you know anyone that is interested, send them our way! Or find out more.
Q: When someone asks “Why Aurora?”, what’s your go-to response?
There is a lot going on in Aurora, so you should probably jump on board now! Aurora has diverse dining experiences for visitors with over 200 ethnic eateries, you have endless opportunities to try new places and unique cuisines. There are two beautiful reservoirs, fun local events throughout the year, amazing indoor/outdoor shopping centers, including Southlands Shopping Center, and of course, the Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center opening this December!
Q: Lighting round! Your best recommendations for coffee, dinner, and something to do in Aurora.
Coffee, Logan’s Coffee House. Dinner, Borealis at the Hyatt Regency Aurora-Denver Conference Center. I enjoy watching Beat Bobby Flay on the Food Network and Borealis’ Chef, Tim Freeman, was on the show and actually beat Bobby! Late night fun, Dry Dock Brewing Company South Dock. Between trivia nights, new beer releases, and crafts, this place always has something going on. Anytime fun, HappyTea! They’ve got a ton of milk tea flavors, egg waffle ice cream cones, and my favorite – boba tea.
Q: Where do the locals go for food and fun?
Stanley Marketplace is a favorite spot for many locals in Aurora. Their team has done a great job of creating a fun and inclusive environment for the community. There truly is something for everyone. Whether you’re with family, friends, or just your dog! There’s a variety of restaurants, shopping, entertainment, fitness, and services available to many types of lifestyles. Best of all, they are all Colorado-based companies!
I enjoy the opportunity to continuously explore all of the great businesses Aurora has to offer for our visitors, like Fox Theatre, On Havana Street, and so many more. I love being able to promote everything in Aurora so when visitors come to town, they can find everything they desire in our city.
