From print-making to puppeteers – you’ll find it at the People’s Building. Described as a collaboration location for independent artists, actors, performers, and musicians, this grassroots visual arts space is Aurora’s go-to spot for exploring local arts and culture. Here, visitors can attend concerts and jazz performances, wander around the art gallery, giggle during a comedy show, attend a speaker series, and even give square dancing a shot. The combination Gallery and Flex space allows for everything from seated workshops to bluegrass concerts.
Grounded in diverse programming and community representation, Aaron Vega, Curator/Facilities Coordinator of the People’s Building, relays that it’s a hub for local artists to showcase in a real visual arts space complete with lighting, sound equipment, and other attributes that contribute to an excellent performance.
Vega says the fringe-space plays host to “…crazy, fun, eclectic entertainment you’re not going to get anywhere else” as artists of all disciplines are booked to perform. With shows, concerts, and galleries popping up every week follow their Facebook page or visit their website to discover upcoming events.
Craving crunchy, savory samosas? Roam Colfax’s international food hall located inside The Mango House building. Urban Burma opened earlier this year and serves up a modern twist on classic Burmese eats without sacrificing flavor, spice, and of course – garlic. Their simple menu showcases curry dishes with notes of masala, ginger, and turmeric alongside hardy noodle bowls, including Shan Noodles in a chicken curry broth. Diners can slurp down Nan Gyi Dok, thick rice noodles adorned with crispy fried onions and cilantro or try the Tea Leaf Salad, created from fermented tea leaves, cabbage, tomatoes and topped off with fried peanuts. Vegetarian options are plentiful. After eating, walk around the Mango House for a little international shopping or grab something to go from the other five international restaurants.
