The Aurora Fox Arts Center, a historic landmark located at 9900 East Colfax in the Aurora Arts District, is the city's performing arts center. The Aurora Fox is a 245 seat performing arts facility, with attached rehearsal and scenery shop facilities. A former movie theatre that was built in 1946, the Aurora Fox was completely renovated and reopened in March of 1985 and currently serves as the home for the Aurora Fox Theatre Company, and the Aurora Fox Children's Theatre Company.
Aurora residents had longed for a theater since motion pictures became popular, but the Great Depression and World War II made this type of construction impossible. As soon as the war was over, however, the Fox Inter-Mountain Amusement Corporation built this 650-seat theater. The building consists of a U.S. Army quonset hut fronted with an Art Moderne entrance block, marquee, and neon sign. A fire forced the theater's closure in 1981, but the building has been restored and currently operates as a professional performing arts theater and community cultural center.
